MOSAICS ON POTTERY
MOSAICS ON POTTERY
O’Hara resident Shabnam Mirchandani is a mosaic artist and a writer. As a former English teacher, she has had a deep connection with the mechanics of language, and is especially interested in its visual cadences and its power of semiotic expression. She views color as a language as well, and uses the artistic medium of mosaic work on pottery to give form to sound, emotion, fantasy, and lived experience.
Her debut collection entitled “Cosmic Whimsy” imbues her mosaics with the cultural imprint of her native India. Each pot is a vessel of memories capturing her sense of wonder at the richly transformational relationships that have sprung from her life’s trajectory.
She draws inspiration from her mother’s embroidered handlooms, and the profusion of color that her native India’s festive, artistic, and spiritual traditions brought to her sensibility as a child. Shabnam moved to Pittsburgh nearly three decades ago and finds endlessly renewing inspiration from its topography, especially its scenic confluence of hills and rivers.
